Focused on athletes just like you!
The team at Rick Wells Sport are all passionate about helping our swimmers achieve their goals, no matter what these are. Each and everyone has achieved in the sporting arena, whether it is representing NZ on the world stage in triathlon or competing in swimming here and overseas. The squads are full of like-minded athletes who train solidly, like to have some fun from time to time but are focused on achieving together, we are not elite swimmers but we do have many that compete at the top echelon of their age group in both Masters swimming and triathlon - and then we have many that continue to develop their personal bests coming from very modest bases...so do join us!
Meet The Team
Rick represented NZ in swimming from 1979 to 1985 during which time he held numerous national titles and international representations (including commonwealth games team). Turning to triathlon in 1987, Rick won both the world short course and long course championships, Gold at the 1990 Commonwealth games (all at a time when the sport was very new!)
Rick has also represented NZ at Surflifesaving (and is still involved) and in 1993 was awarded an MBE for service to Sport.
Still involved in occasional competing –Rick now focuses his attention on helping the next generations of athletes realise their potential. Rick has been involved in coaching at Newmarket for a number of years...helping kids and adults alike to achieve their potential.
Dan coaches some Saturdays and acts as our technical coaching advisor. Coaching for over 20 years, Dan is a specialist swim coach, working with swimmers at all levels from beginners to national elite. Having been awarded numerous NZ Swimming awards for coaching including National Age Group coach from 2003-2008 and again in 2016 we are proud to be able to offer Dan’s expertise both to our swimmers and working with our regular coaching team.
A technical coaching expert in all four key swimming strokes (and for pool and open water), Dan focuses on getting swimmers to understand and correct what they are doing in the water; working towards more efficient/effective techniques (and ultimately better performances on race day). (And yes, that means breaking our stroke and body position down and using targeted drills to retrain).
One on one sessions are also available with Dan, these use specialist video analysis and in-water audio feedback equipment. Additionally Dan is a specialist in swimming equipment including pool toys (what and why for you) and wetsuit selection…so just ask!
